The monkeypox virus outbreak is growing in the United States and elsewhere. As of today, Bexar County has two confirmed cases of monkeypox. Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. This virus is part of the same family of viruses as smallpox. The symptoms are similar to smallpox symptoms, but milder; and it is rarely fatal. The illness typically lasts 2-4 weeks. Sometimes, people get a rash first, followed by other symptoms. Currently, the risk of monkeypox infection to the public remains low. Individuals should be aware of the symptoms of monkeypox and seek medical attention if they experience new, unexplained rashes or skin lesions.

Bexar County COVID-19 risk levels are high. San Antonio Metropolitan Health would like to remind everyone to safely and follow the COVID-19 prevention strategies – mask up in crowded indoor places, get tested if you have been exposed or have symptoms, and stay up to date with the COVID-19 vaccine and boosters. To find the nearest vaccine clinic visit us online at https://covid19.sanantonio.gov/News-Events/Events

Cultural Context Statements are used by historic preservationists to identify important places, events, and forms of intangible heritage such as music, songs, dances, spirituality, festivals, even parade routes. Statements also help make decisions about preserving cultural heritage. This
work can result in historic designations, historic markers, street naming, exhibitions, and heritage trails such as Civil Rights Trails.
