SAGE Announces New Store-Front Grant Recipients

SAN ANTONIO (December 6, 2019) – Continuing its mission as an economic growth engine for new and existing Eastside businesses, local non-profit San Antonio for Growth on the Eastside (SAGE) announced five SAGE Store-Front grants have been awarded this quarter.

The SAGE Store-Front Grant Program provides qualified property owners an opportunity to improve their properties with grants that must be matched dollar-for-dollar and are available only to commercial property owners. Grants are awarded to commercial properties located within the Eastside Promise Zone, which are the boundaries for the SAGE service area.

“The Eastside has been steadily seeing growth and small businesses are crucial to the revitalization,” said President and CEO of SAGE, Tuesdaé Knight. “SAGE is proud to be able to provide this opportunity to growing businesses.''

The deadline to submit applications for the final round of matching grants will be scheduled for March 2020.

Store Front Grant Recipients:

The Lord’s Kitchen (118 Seguin St.): Owner Ray Perez has operated his Eastside burger staple since September 1994. The Lord’s Kitchen is a hidden gem, located across IH-35 from Fort Sam, and is well-known for its 3 lb. burger. Mr. Perez wants to improve his exterior facade to continue and enhance his mission is to always provide great food and a hospitable place to dine. Mr. Perez has been awarded a $10,000 matching grant and will utilize the funds to repair and replace the roof, signage, lighting, asphalt,siding, doors, and new paint and trim.

NB Grayson, LLC (1526 E. Grayson): NB Grayson, LLC are the owners of neighboring buildings at E. Grayson and New Braunfels Ave., both constructed in the early 1900s. Mr. Edward Sherfey hopes to create and maintain a space that serves as a neighborhood cornerstone, as his company is seeking to restore 4,000 sq.ft. of retail/office/creative space to accommodate new employees. NB Grayson, LLC has been awarded a $3,900 matching grant to assist with restoring a property through power washing, priming, and painting exterior walls, awnings and ties, gutters, and railings.

Toltec, LLC (221 Burleson): Toltec, LLC has operated a collaborative co-working environment for over 12 years and has now expanded to the Eastside, as owner Paul Carter and Manager Thomas Nyman seek to expand the success of their collaborative radius model. They’re converting a space on Burleson that once was a warehouse into a coworking event space. Toltec, LLC has been granted with a $5,000 matching grant to replace signage, windows, overhead door, deck railings, and landscaping.

Waiters Insurance Agency (1501 S. New Braunfels): For the past 20 years Clarence Waiters has owned and operated his Eastside business, Waiters Insurance Agency. Mr. Waiter’s Eastside property, located at the corner of New Braunfels and Denver, was granted a $4,592.50 matching grant and will undergo its renovations as follows: replace and paint porch, paint and repair fencing and rail posts, replace/update lampposts, replace door, and repair striping on asphalt.

Williams Barber College (520 S. WW White Rd.): Williams Barber College was established in February 1993 and has since been operating as an Eastside barber college for hundreds of men and women interested in the cosmetology field. Not only do they train others to become certified barbers and instructors, they provide excellent grooming services to the community. Elon Silas with Williams Barber College has been awarded a $10,000 matching grant for exterior paint, asphalt re-pavement and striping, masonry repair, new vents and gutters, and new signage to provide the face-lift it deserves.
